I believe there is some higher power, but religion began out of ignorance not knowledge. For many millenia gods were manifestations of elements. The first effort at monotheism in ancient Egypt was about absolute power and control, not faith. That's whe the pharoah who engineered it made himself the god. Obviously, a plan that audacious didn't work and the pharoah was murdered.
Since ancient times people have molded monotheism so that it won't be rejected outright by the masses. Whether it is realized or not it still has it's roots in the polytheistic beliefs that came before it. When you look at the story of the virgin Mary objectively, you find nothing miraculous. The idea of gods and mortals mating and having children is nothing new. Tweek that basic legend a bit by removing the physical act of sex and now you have a miracle.

Maybe man made the concept of god because there have always been unexplainable experiences that happen. Storms, crime, violence, war, death. Also, birth, birdsong, flowers, rainbows.
Humans have always looked for reasons for things to happen. I think we should look to the animals. They don't need a reason to explain why they eat, wag their tails, purr, kill each other, enjoy the sun. They just do.
I think man made the concept of god or the gods.

Man made God? Who made man? Who is that FANTASTIC artist that makes the seasons come punctually, creates the beautiful scenery (that others try to draw or paint), who made the other creations that the Scientists are trying to clone. If man was so great, why does he copy or use already existing material for his work? Why are you Born to Die?

Peace!
Jesus was always God; and was God made man from the moment of his incarnation: "In the beginning was the Word...and the Word was God...and the Word was made flesh." (John 1,1.14 cf, Timothy 3,16) Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. The second person in the Holy Trinity.

It is rather obvious that god is a product of human fear and wishful thinking.
