Some people leave the television on when their not home to keep the dog company.

Dogs can't actually see the pictures on the TV the same way as we do, they can track movement and see different lights from the TV, it's to do with the frequency in which TV's broadcast at.
There is a great book called "How dogs think", it's information to questions such as this and it's backed up with scientific research and clinical trials.

No, If you watch a dog close to a tv you can see that only cares about it when a particular sound caughts their attention. So they don't really care about "watching" TV.

Dogs don't really know what there watching. Dogs are stimulated by the sounds, not the pictures. Dogs can barely see what is on anyway. They are practically color blind, but can see blue, red, and yellow but not as rich as we see them. If you muted the TV, they would not react.

I've known dogs (and cats) who would sit and watch TV with their people.

My dog not only watches it but she barks at animals. I think she's stupid but at the same time she's pretty smart for recognizing animals and not barking at humans.

Our American Pit Bull Terrier has been know to watch a little t.v. Not for long but some things get his attention. It is so cute!

my miniature dachshund does. he watches it every night with us. i leave the tv on during the day while we are at work so he can hear it.

My bully does it .She is often watching TV. But just for a few minutes.Then she feels bored.
I am so with her on that.
