As a tattoo artist with many years exp. Yes tattoos on the feet don't hold up as well as other spots. Like the hands, the skin goes through alot, (shoes, socks, running around). They will last for awhile but will eventually start fading before others will. As for toes... don't waste your money or the artists time. Extremely low 'shelf life'.

Sunlight will fade a tattoo, so if you wear sandals during summer, I would hesitate. Also something you need to know is, it will form a light colored little scab all over the tattoo shortly after it's done. If you scrape it on shoes, even socks, it could remove that part of the coloring. You must be very careful in in the bath about touching it causing damage. Be sure to check the tattoo artist out thoroughly before having it done. Make sure he only uses the best quality ink. Cheap ink fades much faster.

I just got a foot tattoo about 4 months ago.The artist made very sure that I would not be wearing shoes often durring the following 2 weeks. And made sure that I knew that they can (if not taken care of properly can fade quickly, and will fade more than others with time). Now as for pain,it was about the same aas all my other tattoos, not to bad,but it did make my foot and leg shake very bad. This can very among people. She just laughed and said I had "good nerves".Im very pleased with the out come.I got a old school butterfly with a womans face in the center. The colors stand out beautifully.I know I will be in for touch-ups over the years (somthing im used to already because of the one on my sternum) and thats somthing you have to keep in mind.I would do it all over again-and I am im going to get another on my other foot soon. All in all you want to make sure that you are ok that everyone can see it and that you are prepared to take care of it.Oh and I just want to forwarn you, they may charge extra for this tattoo, some shops charge extra for not-so-common places, and the foot falls in that cataglory.Good Luck,I hope I helped you some!GO FOR IT! ;)

I have a tribal dragon on the top of my foot. I had it done about 4 or 5 years ago and it still looks good and i have never had it touched up. When i went to get it done, one artist told me it wouldn't last long and it would fade so i didn't have him do it. I went to another artist that was known in my city and he said i wouldn't have any problems. I think it all depends on the artist that does it and how well its done. Just get it done during the summer time so you can wear sandals while it heals.
Good luck!

Hi, i have black tribal designs on my feet and toes. It's true they're not holding up as well as other tattoos I have on other parts of me. In saying that, I have them done 3 years now & its only if I hold my foot right up to my face that I can see minor imperfections and if I pull the skin, there are small faded patches. But for other people looking at them, or when I look down on my own feet, they look absolutely fine.
A friend of mine has had her feet done for years & they never faded. Aparently it's all to do with your skin type, I think the thinner your skin is, the more likely it is to fade. Anyway, these things can be touched up.
Hope this helps...

I got an angel tattoo on my foot. My tattoo artist told me to spend the next week or so with my foot up on something because my water weight would push the color out of the tattoo. I tried to do this but my tattoo DID fade quite a bit. (if you go to http://www.tattoobin.com/index.asp, and click on the fantasy section, mine is called 'baby angel kissing a dove....theres a before and after picture, you can see how much it faded). I got it touched up a few months later but within 3 weeks all that color flaked and fell off. It might depend on how much you weigh, because I'm heavier, Maybe I had more water weight pushing down on my tattoo and that caused it to fade...maybe my tattoo artist didnt go deep enough with the color. But to answer your question, Yes, it can fade.

My left foot is sleeved, and granted I've only had it for 3 years, but it still looks just as good as the day I got it. HOWEVER I noticed that because of the fact that you're constantly walking and your foot is always in motion, I noticed that my tat literally dried out within an hour. So I had to pretty much hourly take off my shoe and put my tattoo goo on it. Also another tip since I work in a hospital and can't wear flip flops to work, in the event that you have to wear tennis shoes or whatnot to work, what I did was I put some of the tat goo on it, then wrapped in in syran wrap for the day, then covered it with an ace bandage to keep the syran wrap from coming off, and not only did that help lessen the pain, but my foot stayed moist all day, then I took it off and let it air out when I wasn't at work! Hope this was helpful!

I don't think so, I have seen some really nice tattoos on peoples feet that did not look faded. The worse part about feet tattoos is the healing time and the rubbing of shoes on the tattoo. If you are thinking about getting one, I would suggest waiting until summer unless you live in a warm climate!

I have a small purple flower w/black tribal on the top of my left foot and I also have a purple rose with a vine around my right ankle...w/ the vine going down onto the top of my foot. I have had no problem with fading. I love the way they look and get a lot of compliments on them. They were painful to get just because that area is so close to bone and there isn't muscle or fat. It was worth the pain though...=)
