Don't they make enought from the fare? Is tipping the cab driver a given and has to be done? What are your opinions?

Technically you don't *have* to tip anybody, it's simply proper etiquette to tip certain professions such as a cab driver. Tipping a cabbie is a given (at least in the U.S.) but if the cab smells, if the cabbie is rude or takes you on an indirect route to your destination to raise the fare, you should withhold the tip. I have. One thing to consider is the possibility of accidently leaving something in the cab like a wallet or sunglasses; if you didn't tip the cabbie, good luck getting those things back from the cab company.

No, of course you don't. That being said, it depends on where you are. I live in New York City, but in some suburban areas cabbies ride around & pick up several passengers, in that situation it's not customary to tip. If you get a yellow cab in Manhattan (NYC) some of the drivers do expect to be tipped, but most of them understand that it's optional. If you're in NYC in a borough other than Manhattan in a livery cab, the fare is higher for short trips & your not expected to tip (I do tip if I'm going back to Manhattan from another borough, because the fare is allot less than a yellow cab would charge).

Personally I tip at least the change for a yellow cab ride (unless I get a terrible driver) & usually an extra dollar or three if I like the cabbie or it's the summer & I want the AC cranked. I drive, so I know how expensive gas is & most cab drivers don't get reimbursed anywhere near what they spend on it. Yes they do get a salary but in my opinion, after all the fees they have to pay they're actually underpaid. You couldn't pay me enough to drive in rush hour traffic, that's why I take taxis.

It depends on the driver. If he drives carefully, or if he is courteous, and if he doesn't make repeated complains on the heavy traffic, then I give him a tip. Otherwise, I don't.
I don't know why it has become a custom to tip cab drivers when actually, they should not be tipped at all. I just follow what the culture is around me.

I don't think that you should unless they went out of their way. You are absolutely correct. They get a salary just like everyone else. For some reason they feel they deserve to get tipped just like other professions like waitresses and such. I do Accounting work, so should I, or other professions, expect to receive a tip in addition to our salaries? I dont think so. It is their job and it is up to their employer to pay them, not paying customers.

I usually tip the driver. It is ettiquete now and is the nice thing to do. You could not tip I guess, but our society generally does.

I usually give the driver the change (coins) that I get back plus one dollar. In other words my tips will always be in the range of $1.00-$1.99.

I would recommend it just to prevent them from taking you out in the woods, mugging and sodomizing you, and leaving you for dead. It has been known to happen. Well worth the extra few bucks in my opinion...
