Well, I think I know why my wife wanted to marry a returned missionary.

First, she's in love with me. Hard to believe, and I marvel at this every day, but it 's true.

Second, the experiences I had as a missionary made it possible for me to be a good husband and father. I'd seen a bit of the world, met good and bad people, and learned to deal with adversity. In short, I grew up.

Third, I'd proven I could make and keep commitments. Sticking with a mission in another country for two years isn't easy, but marriage isn't always a picnic, either.

Fourth, (and maybe most important) I'd developed my own spiritual strength, so I could be the spiritual leader of my family.

Our church encourages that women marry return missionaries for a few reasons that I can think of:

1) To be a returned missionary, you have to have originally qualified to go on the mission. This requires that the YM has followed the church standards and lived righteously and faithfully, ensuring the safety of the woman.

2) It encourages the YM to go on missions, which gives more people the opportunity to hear the True Gospel.

3) It keeps both the YM and YW from marrying too early.

The typical experience of returned missionaries in the church results in dramatically increased spiritual maturity that is difficult to find through other avenues.

They who? I would say lots of girls want to marry return missionaries because they know they have a strong testimony and believe in the gospel and they want a husband who honors his Priesthood and is temple-worthy.

Not all LDS men go on missions. It is kind of a status symbol to marry one who has gone on a mission.

It makes all men go out on missions. Spreads their word. Seams simple enough to me.
