I live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in Dare County. This is a very seasonal community that makes a killing off of DUIs in the summer. I think the money would be put to good use by investing in public transportation.... maybe not good for the government but surely for the people.

start attending city council meetings and bring up the issue. Make petitions that you can use as leverage in persuading them to become more proactive in developing an economical transportation system. Email your senators and representatives monthly (or weekly) as well as representatives in the state legislature.

Go to http://www.co.dare.nc.us/General/directory.htm and email people in Human Resources, Planning, and Finance Departments but you are going to need a case to present to them so come up with three or more ideas; they need to be convinced before they help you.

Steve Shriver (stevens@co.dare.nc.us) is the planning engineer and should be helpful.

By the looks of the directory, a lot of the budget goes towards water issues, so maybe if you come up with some ideas to integrate public transportation with another thing they are putting money towards they will come across the proposal a bit more intrigued.

Here's another link about going to commissioner's meetings:
http://www.co.dare.nc.us/BOC/BrdsCommt.pdf
Their next meeting is on the 16th at 5pm

I think you should browse through the website.

Get together with like-minded people and buy a used extended-cargo van, preferable one with windows on the sides.
Start by carpooling friends and family for a reasonable rate, and spread the word. Make regular stops according to terrain and population.
Your rate should be based on how much it costs for you to keep a well-maintained vehicle, plus pay for your time. If it costs someone less to drive their own car, they won't use your service.
If it works out, buy another van and hire a driver. Usually, once you have a working business, the county will have to recognize it.

Good luck!

Why not you and some friends start up your own bus company. Buy a couple of busses, get all the licenses and permits you need and start traveling the roads making yourself seen.

Private enterprise is always a better solution than government intervention.
