If not, how could I find out if a person has been convicted of a crime in the past?

I dont think that the arrest would appear on his credit report but the credit report could signal a few problems since
most people have alittle bit of trouble keeping on top of bills while sitting in jail.
IF you see problems on the credit report, have them explain and see if the explanation makes sense.
Convictions should be public record
depending on your state, you can do a police records check for the person. It should be public information.
