All that's been said may be true, but nobody gave you a remedy. Place the cookies in an airtight container with 2 or 3 slices of bread and let them sit overnite. The cookies will absorb the moisture from the bread and you will have soft cookies to chow down on!

I have had this happen to me. If you did not over bake them in the oven, then maybe not enough butter or too much. What I do to make softer cookies is use half the amount of butter and then for the rest, use crisco shortening or add an extra egg white only not the yolk of it. This will help to make the cookies softer. Sometimes cutting a minute off of the baking time helps to make them not so hard.

Added too much flour or overcooked them are the first things that come to mind. Maybe the peanut butter you used didn't have much oil in it, which would happen if you used peanut butter that was made from freshly ground peanuts. Also, to get softer cookies it's best to use corn syrup as part of the sugar.

Maybe cooked them to long. Under cook your cookies a little because when you take them out they still bake a little. My mom always used to overbake her cookies and then she put a piece a bread in with them and a cover over them and then they became the best soft cookies ever.
I thought bread and cookies went together. ha

You probably either added too much flour or baked them too long. Keep in mind, they're supposed to be a bit gooey when you take them out of the oven. They harden some as they cool.

I have baked many hard cookies, and have discovered that the best way to keep them from getting hard is to add more flour. they will keep a better shape, and stay soft when cool.

They could be overcooked but it is possible that you over mixed or over beat your ingredients causing the gluten in the four to become stiff.
