At the early age of a year old, children don't often remember their birthday experience. Try getting your friend's daughter a gift that the parents will appreciate. Rather than a toy, maybe you can buy clothes instead.
Another really neat idea is to buy a savings bond from the bank. It doesn't have to be a large amount of money... $25.00 should be sufficient and the savings bond will grow interest.

Since you have a computer it may also be helpful to check out some websites. I know that Target and Toys R Us have toys devided by age which helps me to know what to buy my daughters. I know that there is a list somewhere of toys for that specific age. I like to buy the basic toys like stacking rings, blocks, phones and push/walker toys. There is a link below that has some good ideas too.

My daughter (1 yr) loves anything that makes noise, especially music. Her favorite toys are Baby Tad, and the Leap Frog ABC magnets (they sing songs about the letters), and a story book that says nursery rhymes outloud.

The one thing I always give to one year olds is those ride-on cars that require your child to push with their feet. One is the perfect age for these as they are just begining to walk. My son and his cousins LOVE it!
