I'm really not sure why you would think that an inability to speak would have any effect on sneezing or coughing. I wasn't aware that speaking was involved with either body function.

Of course."Mute" means only a deficiency in speech. It usually isn't anything physical (and if it were, that physical wouldn't affect other physical items.)
