The only scientific reason I can remember has to do with air pressure. The air pressure can change dramatically before a storm or other weather related tempest is about to happen.
Scientists have studied animals before an earth quake and found that some, not all, react by going to a place of safety. Maybe they can feel things we humans have closed our own minds to.

As far as acting weirdly when other phenomenon is about to occur: I do believe alot of animals have a "sixth" sense. I know that when I used to manage a dog pound many animals knew when their time was up. Maybe it was a change in my attitude they sensed. I always hated that aspect of the job.
But, I've noticed that my cats KNOW when something bad is going to happen, to me or someone they feel close to. They KNOW when we are in need of tenderness and love. I'm sure scientists don't have an explanation for this one either, but then again, they still don't have any idea why a cat purrs.

That is an excellent question. And the answer is.. because Earth, space, and even time are all inter-woven. Meaning every living things is connected to every other living thing. Its us humans that are too concerned about our iPods and traffic to notice that we are all part of ONE system. Animals naturally form a balance between their surroundings and all other forms of life. Some animals also have sensing abilities far beyond humans.

Some people believe animals have a 'sixth' sense and therefore can sense beforehand when something unusual is about to happen. Some people also believe that animals can see 'spirits'.

Because animals have their sixth sense much more developped as very few human beings have. They can feel an earthquake, a tornado, even a thunderstorm way ahead of time before it actually happens or we become aware of it.

With earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural phenomena it's all about infrasound waves, not air pressure. Also, cats feel very confortable about replying on non-verbal cues from each other, from us and from the environment that we train ourselves to ignore. Aside from that, they see much better in the dark.
I'm not ruling out the sixth sense either.
