The General Mobile Radio Service.

A two way radio service for families and individuals. This is a communications service requiring an FCC license. The most common form of a GMRS radio can be found at almost any store that sells electronics. These radios typically include the GMRS frequencies as well as the license-free Family Radio Service frequencies.

GMRS had its roots in the 1960s when all that was available was commercial grade equipment.
