I remember a friend of mine getting one years back. The clarity was really nice but the price kept it from catching on.

I have HDTV on my cable and I really don't see much of a difference between that and my dvds. plus between the price of the drive, expense of the movies and limited selection will make this a standard that really isn't going to catch on.

While Blue Ray is much better for storage than HD DVD, I think the name recognition oh HD menaing high definition will win out for most non technical folks.

DVD's were expensive when they first came out, too. Later this year a player that can play both HD-DVD and BluRay is coming out. I think players like this will be very commonplace in the future and it won't matter if it is HDDVD or BluRay anymore.

HD-DVD and BluRay are better quality than HD Cable. HD Cable and satellite have to use compression to get the signal to fit in allocated bandwidth, where HD-DVD/BluRay there's still compression but you have a lot more space to work with. You can get a 1080p picture out of it which is better than any broadcast source available. If you have a good HDTV, you will see the difference between HD-DVD/BluRay, HD cable/satellite and a regular DVD on a progressive scan DVD player.

It may not matter who wins if the industry converges in both directions.

The upcoming Consumer Electronics Show will be significant for two things: the unveiling of a hybrid HD DVD/BluRay DVD player, and the availability of dual-format DVDs that can play on both HD DVD and BulRay players.

The winner will not necessarily be the backers of HD DVD and BluRay, but consumers and the availability of hi-res material and universal recording and playback equipment at affordable prices.

I really think HD DVD will be the overall winner.

Hopefully not, hopefully people will do some research or not depend on the "HD" part of the title.
