Alkaline batteries are disposable and are safe to throw away as modern batteries don't contain mercury anymore (or only very small harmless trace amounts). Rechargeable batteries are not and you should recycle them. They are bad for the environment and are illegal to throw in the garbage although I've never heard of anyone getting busted for it. Radio Shacks have a recycling container in every store, just take them up there in a ziplock bag the next time you're by there.
