When you have had no menstrual periods for 1 year, you have reached menopause. Menopause symptoms include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, emotional changes, such as mood swings or irritability, a change in sexual interest or response, problems with concentration and memory that are linked to sleep loss and fluctuating hormones, headaches, rapid irregular heartbeats, and generalized itching. As far as medical testing is concerned, your doctor would do a follicle stimulating hormone test which would confirm whether you have reached menopause. This particular hormone increases during perimenopause and is high after menopause.

I began the menopause last year.I am 46.It started with a distinctive feeling of heat called hot flushes.(not the same as just feeling hot). Then i started getting night sweats with the flushes then day and night sweats. My periods stopped for 4 months only to start again, then stop again 2 months later. My skin and hair have become dryer and i am more tired and cannot sleep properly.I know this is only the begining and i may have more symptoms to come. You can consider hormone replacement therapy or an alternative such as black cohosh or red clover from health food shops. It is worth looking at what age your mother started the menopause to see if you are around the same age as this is common.I am having a hot flush as I write and when it is finished(a minute or two) I will feel a chill, then in about half an hour i will have another.Middle age does'nt come easy but there are some excellent books out there to read and familiarise yourself with the symptoms and what you can do to make it as comfortable as possible.

I can tell u how it feels as i am going thru it right now. I am 49 and have been premenopause for 3 years now. Premenopause means your periods start getting very irregular. I do not get any hot flushes, thank God but have had some sleepless nights for a very short period. Have done blood test and yes very high hormone as there is no ovulation and have been without a period for months. That is because the glandule 'thinks' lol that if it sends more hormone to the womb, your period is gonna come, which is faulty. Otherwise I have been feeling pretty well and I do not thinkyou should worry too much about what people say. I do not need any help in terms of HRT, which docs do not want to give anymore unless strictly necessary. So smile!

Nurse Anni gave a great answer. I would just like to add, there are two excellent books that you can read. One is called "The Wisdom of Menopause" by Christine Northrup and the other is called "The Sexy Years" by Suzanne Somers. Don't let the title of the second one put you off, it really does contain some valuable information. The best thing to do is educate yourself on the symptoms and the best way for you to alleviate them.

Although the hot flushes weren't too bad, I got very depressed and suicidal (and murderous!), which meant that when I wasn't plotting my own demise, I was plotting that of my long suffering husband! My memory went all to pot and I was truly hopeless at driving - I was the one waiting for the traffic lights to change to a colour that I liked, and for the dot on the horizon to become a car before pulling out of junctions! It felt like my head was full of wool. The skin on my neck went like crepe paper. I went to see my Practice Nurse and wept all over her desk. She rescued me with HRT (patches first, but they came off at night and stuck to my husband who panicked a bit cos he thought he'd grow breasts with all the oestrogen, so I changed to tablets). I've had 5 good years like this, but now my GP says that it's time to come off the tablets. O.M.G!!! However will I manage? I'm coming off them by taking one every other day and am considering one of the herbal remedies from places like Holland and Barratt. Apparently I'm more at risk from breast cancer or heart disease if I continue with HRT for more than the 5 years. I'm 55 now but still do most of the things that I did in my twenties (just a bit slower!) - ride the horse (muck out and all the other bits that go with owning one), walk the dogs. Sex is a bit dodgy though, you sort of dry up a bit with the menopause - must get some KY or something similar. It's almost a case of the spirit is willing, but the body is getting weaker! Keep your chin up and carry on enjoying life!
