THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION. My friend and I were just discussing something similar last night.
EVERY significant event in history, should it be changed, would have a great impact on today.
Everything happens for a reason... and every "reason" has its purpose
(did that make sense?)
There have been sooo many significant events in my/OUR past and I am only educated on the things they have taught us in school, show us on tv, announce on the radio. There have probably been several other events in history that has made a signifant "dent" on our world and the way we live today.
That's why I love talking to other people and traveling... it's the best way to learn.
...BUT I DIGRESS...
If any part of "our history" is changed, I truly believe our world would be a complete different place today.
However, long answer short: "What event in history, if the outcome could have been changed, would have had the greatest impact today?
I would have to say when Adam took that first bite into the apple.
I mean, if he hadn't taken that bite (and notice I bear no fault in the "female's" position [hehe]) would we still be living in the "Garden of Eden?"
Would we all be living in Paradise?
(...ooh... good question)
Would we still have the same things we do today like ART, MUSIC, LITERATURE, IN-N-OUT BURGER JOINTS?
...great question :)

If the printing press was never invented, we would still be living in the dark ages because science would never have been able to advance without some sort of mass media to record experiments and ideas.
If the french had lost the battle of Tours in 732, the whole world would probably be islamic.
