Every countries now says that they want to build a mut-cultural society. However, when you see Japan, there is only one race but they are so successful. Is it that necessary for British to build one?

To CC, definitely you are wrong. Japan is unique even when comparing with other Asian people.

A multi-cultural society shows how different people can easily adapt to others needs. Does it work? Not always. Is that a good enough reason to deny it. I think not. We are all human and need to accept each other and our beliefs. At the moment It is not possible, in my humble opinion. I had friends from all race and religions twenty years ago and it was not an issue, I don't understand the difficulty now, but until it is resolved we must stay apart as war is not a good thing. I'd love it if we all got on, but that is not happening, Why, That is the $64,000 question.I wish we would all just learn to get on, the world at the moment is like one big kindergarten, if one of us doesn't get our way we beat the smaller guy into submission, pathetic!!! Hope you are all having a Very Happy New Year. Best Wishes.xxx

There are several benefits, which my personal view is that the benefits are far outweighed by the disadvantages.

Benefits include learning from new cultures, about their history and religions, their food and such.

However it often leads to the different cultures sticking togeather in their own communities and creates separation of the cultures and races, it enables racism to come out in people when they discover that they may not like some of the customs and activites of the other cultures and there is often tension between the different groups.
The original residents of the host country will also have not had a choice in the matter, while the people immigrating to the country will have done so by their own choice which creates anger from the original residents.

Actually Japan has been successful in building a multicultural society. The process has been going on for several hundred year and has had its ups and downs just like other countries that are now belatedly working towards such societies. Depending on your perception of what constitutes culture I think you may see in Japan a wealth of differences in language and literature variation in music and food - just to name three elements of culture. Even a brief study of Japanese history will show how social and political integration has taken place. Japan may well be a role model for multiculturlism in fact - if one takes care to avoid the excesses.

On this day and age a multicultural society has a lot more meaning that it use to. Before, countries like Japan could live isolated for centuries and keeping to their traditions was a way of keeping things in order. However, with the communications across the world the way they are and the facilities people have to move around, close societies find themselves facing xenophobic groups (fear of aliens) because they have never faced the outside. I personally think that the important issue is to respect everyone regardless of were they come from, and if that means aknowledging a multicultural society, so be it

with multi cultural societies you get a mixture of languages and religions. Japan, might not be called multi-cultural society, but they still recieve a diffussion of culture all around the world. Like business peoples in Japan speak English, to trade with other English speaking countries.

well we can learn from each other , culture, religion , food, philosophy. my best advice is visit Dubai they have an extremely diverse society and its a lovely place to live. there is a huge respect for each other.I have met some very interesting people there and enjoy learning how they live , their values and attitudes.
People in the UK can be negative about having "foreigners " here. They are usually people from an older generation or readers of the tory press.
I believe this stems from the fact that a couple of generations ago people were promised a free health service and welfare state.
many people went without and fought wars to live in this new world.. and now they feel cheated when they can see immigrants coming here and sharing the fruit of their labours. I can understand how they feel.
The uk has always had immigrants but now we also have many british people who are unwilling to work , and are lying in the safety hammock of the welfare state. These tend to be the biggest complainers that" we are being invaded"
.The Uk would be a better place if everyone who lived here had a job and were proud to work and be a part of society..............
and our genes benefit from cultural diversity.

Multi-cultural society is good if only the visitors could understand they need to integrate and adhere to the values and culture of the country that welcome them. But in the case of Britain it is quite different, the minority is trying to impose their ways of life on the majority which is wrong in my opinion. Please readers make no mistake i am not a British citizen but an immigrant from a minority group.Assuming this is happening in my country i will disagree to it.However Britain cannot do without immigrants because of their ways of life,my reasons are witheld

Look at it this way. I'm not religious but the story about the people building a tower up to heaven and God made them all different and speak different languages so they couldn't. There is a good point here, what is wrong with everyone just sticking to their own culture. Visit others fine but don't try and re-arrange what has been for thousands of years.

power to influence other countries. power to outsource work you dont want to do to other poorer countries.

power to influence countries that are bigger/more powerful than you by doing business with them.

plus its just nice to see people who are different than you and learn new ideas and ways of achieving the same goals together.
and if you choose to be separate and work alone look at the amazing sucess story that north korea presents us all. LOL. (starving people eating bark to live. military spending and propaganda destroying the basis of thought as we speak. an economy that promises that selling plastic pins with dear leader on it will support the future... LOL) Now thats nationalism! (or robbery)

we are all interdependant already, but not enough people have realized this yet. I need japanese engineers to make cool new electronic toys and my robots as much as they need the food my country produces as much as we need the clean air from brazils rainforests as much as they need the oil from arabia as much as you all need computer parts from Taiwan to run your internet that you read right now upon.

if we throw that all away and resort to backstabbing and racist generalization and nationalism to 'crush' your competition, guess what... we all go down the tubes and we are back to hitting stones together, camping out and hunting each other for food because your beef from brazil wont be comin anymore...

so ya, get tolerant quick because if some guy in the whole chain of production falls off...

guess what- you are eating tree bark and your neighbor next in your mega city that modern technology allows us.

nature does not allow us to have this many people. only technology and working together and if you are religious, the grace of god.

last time i checked most popular religions encourage working together and loving your neighbor and forgiving stupid mistakes...
