Sorry - It's always tough to loose a pet : (
Just tell him that he'll always have the memories of the dog in his heart.

The picture thing is a good idea. Or you could print this poem and frame it. It's called "Rainbow Bridge". I do not know who wrote it, but it is widely known now.
RAINBOW BRIDGE
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over... together.

My dog died Tuesday of this week from natural causes (old age). I spend most of my time just remembering things about her and about the time we spent together. I usually talk about this to my boyfriend, who also misses her. 2 months before she died I adopted a dog although I love my adopted dog a whole bunch she is not a replacement for my older dog. There is no way to replace a dog once they have passed away, you just have to remember them and talk about them to keep their memory alive.
I'm assuming that your uncle may want to do the same, talk about memories of his dog and about the time you spent together. The loss of a pet is a taught one and it takes awhile to get over. There may be times when your uncle might want to be left alone or perhaps show emotion and the bet thing to do is to just be there for him and comfort him when he needs comfort.
I am really sorry for your loss and I hope your uncle feel better with time. Getting another dog is not the right direction for some nor a replacement as I said earlier. Good Luck.

Talk about all the good times you spent with that pet. If the dog had an illness and was in pain you could say his suffering has ended. Saying good bye is hard but it is a part of life.
Sorry About Your Lose.

Maybe it could sound stupid, but i believe that the dog is the most faithful animal that exists. So i think your uncle has to be sure that his loved dog is still thinking of him and loving him, so he hasn't to feel sad. His dog is still with him.
(I'm sorry for my language but I'm Italian...)

Find a really nice picture of him and his dog, or just his dog and have it blown up (like 8"x10" or so ) and professionaly matted and framed.
Or just frame it yourself if moneys an issue.
Then just sit with him whe you give it to him and ask him to tell you some stories about his lost buddy.
Don't expect him to forget or replace him, just help him fondly remember him.
He'd love that.

He'll always have memories, pictures, and the love they shared was great. I have lost two dogs that were very special to me.
Just remind him that he'll see him again someday ;-)

Ask him about his fondest memories of this beloved companion and listen to his stories. Please DON'T recommend that he "replace" the dog ..... this is not a relationship to be taken lightly, and you would not suggest replacing any other family member after its death, would you?
