On daily useage of the english language, you call a man your boyfriend, then it'll imply that you and him are lovers. So if you're a homosexual, the by all means go for it. If your not a homosexual, then just say he's your friend.

I've got nothing against gay people (they are always happy), but if you're straight you have buddies, friends, pals, etc...NOT BOYFRIENDS!
