I'm designing an electric car, and I'm wondering which would be more efficient. Both would have to be back lit for nighttime driving.

The LCD will use less power than the analogue gague.

I doubt you can get either one to work for you since the engineering would have to incorporate so much other technology.
The old mechanical movements were driven by a cable off gearing in the transmission.
The newer cars are also driven in a similar fashion, but, use a magnetic sensor driven off lobes in either the transmission, or the differential.
Since the pick up is involved,it is a pulsating wave of varying amplitude and modulation/ frequency variation, currant is probably not significant in the electrical circuitry.
IT would remain constant......
Many modern cars use LE D's for illumination now, and only one is used to light the whole dash.
