I have an all white cat...and I love to wear the color black. This was a big problem for me, so I visited my vet and asked him what to do. The best thing to do is...
Feed your cat a brand of food with fish oil in it. There are also little capsules with fish oil in it that you can put on the food. This will def. help your cat from shedding. (Be careful with this because some cats do have an allergic reaction to fish oil...so watch your cat the first couple of times he eats it!)
Also brush your cat everyday...eventually in a month, your cat won't shed so much!
Good luck...

Cats can be shaved but it is very difficult. You would have to take the cat to a groomer. Cats have very thin skin that is very easy to tear during shaving.
I am a certified groomer but have only ever shaved my own cat. She was a Himalayan cat and would get mats in her hair very easy. It was always very difficult to shave her and I could never get it very smooth. I did it at home, not at the shop where they would have the restraints to help keep the cat still. Some cats get too worked up and the groomer can't even do it without sedating the cat first.
But shaving your cat won't eliminate the shedding, the shedded hair will just be shorter. You can't get the cat completely bald.
The best you can do is brush your cat several times a day to try to get the dead hair off. They have all sorts of grooming tools at the pet store to help with shedding.
You might want to consider a hairless or semi-hairless cat, like the Peterbald, for your next cat. They shed very little.
I have hard floors and the swiffer dust-vac works great for picking up animal hair.

Depending on the breed, cats can shed alot or a little. It's a good idea to brush them at least a few times a week to help with with the shedding. That will also help with the hairballs.
Mine love to be brushed and combed.

Brush, brush,brush,brush.......
You just have to keep brushing him all the time.
If he doesn't like it, keep it up until he at least tolerates it.
That's about all you can do short of shaving.
We have 5 cats so I know where you're coming from.
Brush 'em all the time and run the vacuum ALOT!
I'm even developing a taste for gourmet cat hair meals
and the stylish cat hair sweaters I have to wear...LOL
Seriously it isn't that bad. just being a smart **** :)

you could get the FURminator. We got that for our cats, but you have to be very gentle with it. It's the ultra grooming tool:
