To a point. You can't expect them to understand the finer points of Macbeth, but it's been said that smarter dogs have a similar intelligence level to a 6 year old child. A 6 year old can certainly understand you. . .

Nope.

Dogs understand commands that have been learned and tone of voice. That's about it. Everything that you THINK your dog is understanding is only being registered to the dog in the language THEY understand which is "dog".

Dogs do have a sixth sense I think, but that doesn't mean they understand us.

Dogs understand body language and tone of voice from humans, and they interpret it in dog 'language'

Oh they understand us alright. I catch my dogs using their brains all the time! They respond to tone and body language and learn short words like paw, out, walk, come... etc. They don't really understand complete sentences, just the words in them. I you say to your dog "Toby do you want to go for a walk?" He will hear "Toby" and "walk".

Yes, I tell my dog to sit, lay, roll, kiss. Some people can tell their dogs to go to the fridge and get out a beer!

Dogs don't speak english - They only understand words they are trained to respond to.

What a dog hears:
Blah blah blah blah blah good dog, blah blah blah sit

I think so. I can talk about my dog without saying his name or dog and he'll look up at me.

I absolutely believe that they do. They can understand the tone of our voices, and they are very perceptive to our emotions as well.

I`m sure they do because if they didn`t how would they know to go lay down when we tell them to or be able to do any tricks?
