Tornadoes are causes by the same things that cause severe storms: unstable and rapidly moving airmasses. A tornado usually forms from a concentrated storm system called a supercell, which is a rotating area of low pressure just a few miles in diameter and a few miles above the ground. When rainfall becomes intense enough, it can cause a downdraft that pulls the rotating storm system downwards. The descending cloud is called a funnel cloud, and is a well-known warning sign that a tornado is possible. If the twisting cloud reaches the ground, the downdraft causes a large gust of wind, and then the tornado has formed. The tornado continues to be powered by warm, moist air, and can cause damage for several minutes or more than an hour. Eventually, the downdraft drives away the warm, moist air, and the tornado weakens and finally dissipates.
