She is around her due date. Her temp has dropped today to 98.78 and she has been panting. She has also has gone off her food and is resting alot. I thought that this may be the first stage but maybe not as her temp has remained the same but panting has stopped. Will her temp drop more? Should she be panting more often? My vet is waiting on standby should i need him. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check her temperature again. It's not unusual for the temperature to drop and rise and drop and rise a day or two before the real labor starts. She may have just had a bout of "false labor"... Check her temperature at least 2xs a day.

Early labor may also include pacing, and nest-building behavior. Hard labor usually includes the dog "hunching" over, and lifting its tail with each contraction.

...But it sounds like her body is getting ready to whelp those pups, so keep a close eye on her. (We have a pregnant Pit on "watch" in our shelter right now.)

Yes your dog is going into Labor, here's some helpful signs:

12 - Be Alert for Signs of Labor

A few days before the ***** is ready to give birth, she may stop eating and start building a "nest" where she plans to have her puppies-if you're lucky, this will be in the whelping box you have prepared for her.

Shortly before whelping, the *****'s body temperature will drop to 99 degrees or lower (from a normal temperature of 100 to 102.5). By this time, you should have shaved her belly, where appropriate, to allow the puppies to find the nipples for nursing. If she has a long or dense coat, you should also shave and clean the area around her genitals.

Approximately 24 hours after her temperature drops, she can be expected to enter the first stage of labor, when the cervix dilates and opens the birth canal for the passage of puppies. At this time, she will pant, strain, appear restless and may perhaps vomit. Vomiting is normal at the onset of labor, but persistent vomiting may be a sign of illness. This stage of labor is followed by actual abdominal straining and production of the puppies and placentas.

i think this could be early stages of labor so keep a close eye on give her things like towels and things she can use as a bedding for the pups which is a natural thing with dogs if she looks stressed and starts to yelp then i would call out the vet which Means shes beginning to push out the pups.
Good luck for you and the dog

She may be in the early stages of labor. The temp can drop as long as 24 hours before she whelps, so you may have a wait.

You may try taking her out on a leash and see if that helps progress her labor. Sometimes dogs will withhold pushing because they are so well housetrained that they do not want to "push" inside.

If she is straining hard for over a half an hour and no pup has shown, call the vet. Otherwise, she's probably just getting prepared and the pups are getting into position.

Good luck!

Yes, I would say your dog is in labor. Just keep an eye on her and you will know when she is in active labor, meaning when the puppies will start coming. She will start pushing. Good luck!
