I don't see why she would expect to live their for free. I would at least call it chipping in for the bills. Don't call it rent. Then she won't have a problem. She is just chipping in on the bills.

probably not best to word it as rent- ask if she can help contribute to some of the utility bills or have her buy the groceries...having her write you a check for rent may seem awkward but having her pay for other smaller bills wont seem as awkward...you know her so play it by ear and dont start a fight

If two people are going to share a rent-controlled dwelling, they should both have to pay said rent.

ask her be like hey i dont mind payin rent but i was jus makin sure you didnt wanna help if you really need the money though id look to one of your guy friends for the money man
