To complete their quest of ridding the world of what they perceive to be "wrong"... unfortunately they don't validate their own assumptions, or if they do the bias is so big that they just don't see it.

Because good old George Bush Jr. makes it look so easy to start wars that make no sense and can't be justified. So these "extremists" are like, "f*** that, if the American's are dumb enough to be tricked into wars, then we'll have no problem".

Because Extremist hate. Like everybody does.

You will probably get a lot of answers assuming that you meant Muslim extremists. Maybe some assuming Christian or Jewish extremists.

To kill in the name of God wasn't invented by either, by the Time Abraham was born people had already been doing it.

When Cain rose up and smote his brother Abel, that he would die, according to Genesis, was over whose sacrifice was most pleasing to God.

I will pick on Christians first, since I am Christian and thus more familiar with that particular faith.

I will use my famous or infamous story about world war one...

The principal actors in this sad drama are Christian, predominately. Leave us look at 3 kings, all of them cousins to each other. The Kings of England, Germany and Austria.

The soldiers these kings claimed to own were thrown into battle against each other. They were given, just to make it more amusing apparently, bolt action rifles with a bayonet affixed.
In short a spear with one bullet in it. They were commanded by their Kings to have mass charges against the enemy trenches, about a mile away. They were to charge and keep charging into the fire of belt fed, water cooled machine guns.
The English soldiers had chaplains appointed over them, to tell them that it was alright to kill their Christian brethren across No-Man's land, that it was their duty to God to obey.
They were to run across screaming "God and King"!
The Germans and Austrians had the same setup. Only they were to scream Gott mit Uns! which is a literal translation of Immanuel, one of Jesus' names. but also means God is on OUR side!

Meanwhile, in the sands of the Arabian desert, a British colonel, T.E. Lawrence, was uniting the Arab tribes against their Muslim brothers the Turks. The Arabs and the Turks had their Imams, their pastors, telling them that it was all right to kill the Enemy because, even though they were Muslim, they were Dirty Infidel Dogs and Sons of Satan, and Not True Muslims Like You And I Brothers!

And so they killed more people in any single war in all of human history. Christian against Christian, Christian against Muslim, Muslim against Christian.

so, was this a Holy War?
