I totally agree with Cristen 100%. I served in the military myself and knew from the moment I took that oath that the possiblilty of going to war existed and if it ever came to that point I would gladly defend this great country of ours. We are the world leader and the rest of the world looks to us to set things straight. We can't pull out of Iraq now ~ how would that reflect on USA? Be proud to serve your country ~ freedom is priceless!

He is not refusing to serve. He is not even refusing to serve in combat. He is refusing to serve in Iraq.
Why? because the reason he joined, the reason given for invading Iraq, was based on premeditated lies from the administration. He is correct. His "oath / contract" was obtained from him under criminally false statements and intents. He is doing the right thing morally and is willing to pay the price for calling out the administration for what it is. He is doing what the cowards in congress should have done, but didn't have the guts to do.
Frankly, I have no doubt he will be found guilty, but not because he deserves that, but because that's just the way things work. Being right legally and morally means nothing when you take on the military or government. I think his point will be made regardless, and he is indeed brave for not taking the easy way out.

Not everyone in the military agrees with the war, just like not everyone who isn't in the military. We all have our opinions. Also, people who are in the military may have joined BEFORE the war in iraq was even a thought in our minds. They entered into contracts which you can not just break. The military is not a job you can quit. If you get a new boss at work, and they change your shift, cut your hours ect...you can go look for new employment. In the military, you are in until your contract is up and even then you can be called back to duty, extended past your contact ect. So i wouldnt exactly call a servicemember not wanting to go to war a coward. They have their beliefs, opinions, just like you have yours. Most of them do their job without complaint, and some have complaints. I believe they have earned their rights to complain. You get to come here and call them cowards, so let them say what they please. Give them a break!

Lt Watada is not likely being a coward. He did, after all, already volunteer for a deployment in the past, although he never had to go for it. More likely, Lt Watada thinks he's cutting edge in pushing for a political movement. The only problem is that his argument is based on poor logic/legal basis and won't hold water in any military court (meaning he's DEFINATELY going to be punished under the UCMJ for several offenses). Personally, I don't like the way he's pursuing this, but it could be worse: he could be a closet skeptic like some and be feeding top secret info anonymously to the press for whatever returns such informants get from reportrers. Don't get me wrong, I still hope he spends a long time in a small cell.

What challenge? He has a occupation that he loves. fairly some human beings love the militia and different risky jobs (police, firefighter, and so on.). opposite to common perception, the militia would not pay badly, particularly not for the reason that he's been in 17 years and is a minimum of an E-7 if not an E-8... take a look into a pay chart each so in many cases... he's single, he's doing very nicely for himself. He has each appropriate to hate his father. the reason why he's not contacting you lots is for the reason which you for sure do not comprehend.

how about instead of sitting on your a$$ typing rants from a computer, join the military and make a difference. you're a f'ing loser....
east coaster: No I have never been in the military. I grew up in the Air Force and my husband is in the Army. I respect my father, my husband, and members of the military, Im not one to bash them for their personal choices. The "its a volunteer army" crap is old and tired already...get a new line. The war in Iraq is bogus and military personnel are sick and tired of it. Who has ever said that they contest deploying to Afghanistan? I havent heard of a single person; have you? The subject that people are opposed to is the war in Iraq.

We had the same problem during Gulf War I..people joined the Military for the benefits, the college money, or other reasons, but when it came time to actually put themselves in harm's way, they had "issues". These people tended to fall down stairs. Alot.

This is the exact same question I ask myself every single time the troops whine about the war.
I'm also looking for an answer to it.
