Generally, when a dog bites at their feet and legs it is a sign that the dog has an allergy. Anal glands would not cause that...get another opinion about the biting- or ask specfically about allergies.

As for anal glands, anal glands fill-up daily. They secret a rather unpleasant liquid. When a dog defecates, in most cases, the anal glands are emptied. In some dogs for a multitude of reasons (the stool could be small, diarrhea, or the secretion could be very thick) this does not occur. In these cases were problems reoccur, these glands need to be emptied regularly. If this is the case and this is a continual problem, add a little bit of canned, unseasoned pumpkin. The fiber will help her stools bulk up and hopefully get enough pressure to empy the glands.

Oh, and when a dog scoots their butts on the ground, they are trying to empty their anal glands (and it is generally effective, but again, not always)

Plugged or infected anal glands have nothing to do with a dog's feet. The anal glands are located on either side of the dog's anus (they're what carry the dog's personal "scent"; what other dogs check when they sniff another dog's behind).

A skin irritation or allergy may be causing a whole-body reaction that's showing up on the extremities -- and the steroids helped to control that, but the infection in the anal sacs is a separate event. (The feet-thing and the anal gland-thing may have coincidnetally happened at the same time, but are not necessarily related to one another)

We suggest you get a second opion. What your vet told you just doesn't make sense to us.

When my dog gets full anal glands, the first sign is her rubbing her rump on the ground (scooting), she will also attempt to bite the area around her anus, she will smell worse than normal and she will vomit often.

The only time she ever bit her feet and legs was when she had harvest mites, but this time of year that would be unlikely as harvest mites die out around September., unless you live somewhere quite hot. The mites are bright orange, really tiny and congregate between the toes, they are hard to see but you might spot what looks like paprika powder, that is what they look like when they gather together. However, she may simply be biting herself through stress with being uncomfortable having full anal glands.

This is correct. Biting and licking feet can be caused by the anal glands being infected or needing emptying. hen they are like this it causes itching and that is why she does the biting of feet. Strange but true. Ask vet to do the glands for you. Warning when it is done it really smells bad.

my dog had infected anal glands last year, he was not biting or licking his feet, he was rubbing his bum on the carpet and there was a thick brown mucus coming out of his bum, not nice and is really smelly, make sure it has cleared up as it can be very expensive to treat, if the infection gets any worse, the first lot of antibiotics did not work, so he had stronger ones they seemed to work, my vet told me that it could cost up to £1000 for an operation to have the infected gland removed if it did not clear up.

My dog bites his paws all the time. He's got a bald patch on one.

We have taken him to the vat's many time to be told a different reason each time. He's had antibiotic's, powders, sprays and a very expensive cream which he enjoyed eating. He's had his anal glands emptied and he's been wormed, DE-mited and de-fleaed. On one occasion they bandage his paw and he ate the bandage. One vet suggested that he may be doing it through stress but he has Lot's of me time, two friends who he lives with and never has to fight for food (in fact hes top dog).

Most recently the head vet chappy suggested that he does it for the attention because he enjoy's the special fuss he gets at the vets and home (to the extent that he tried to sit down once to have his chest rubbed while having his temperature taken!) something i'm starting to believe.

I've also had a dog that was allergic to grass seeds and she would chew herself but only in the summer, but the cream helped.

Hope he gets better and is not just a nutter like mine.

Your dog could have two seperate problems; her anal glands and her feet.
Chewing the feet can be a sign of stress, or a skin allergy like excema, or a food allergy. Allergies to foodstuffs like maize(corn) can make the toes itchy!
Dogs can be allergic to grass pollen, tree pollen, additives such as maize or colouring in food and chewsticks; or it could be a reaction to something you use on the kitchen floor.
Flea excema or allergies to man made fibres in beanbag beds and carpets usually causes itching and red hot skin on the belly or root of the tail.

Dogs that have full anal glands scoot their rear end across the carpet. Impacted anal glands can become infected and abscessed and need antibiotics to clear the infection as well as regular emptying.

Feasible allergies. Viable anxious addiction. Whether it is diet related a transformation of weight loss program might resolve the challenge. Whether it is nerves, eliminate stress as so much as possible, furnish the canine with plenty of chunk toys and get some bitter apple spray or "Yuck mouth" spray to spray on the tops of her paws. What did your Vet say? Most original allergens in weight loss plan: Wheat, corn, soy fillers and lots of normal meats or meat ingredients utilized in dog meals. Then it helps to get a food with Venison. There are distinct top rate brands which work pleasant for allergy symptoms. My canine had dangerous allergy symptoms and that i bought her on Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice. Dick Van Patten has a best Venison dog food on hand but i have not discovered it, it is not yet effectively on hand. I additionally add just a little of Dan lively Yogurt to my dog's meals and our Vet gives us 3V dermis Caps which have Omega 3, Vit A, D and E in them. To me that's less difficult than balancing out and individually shopping Norwegian Cod liver oil, Vit E and Salmon oil and measuring out the correct amounts.

If anal glands are swollen (and I have had loads of experience and money with my two dogs) they will smell horrid, I mean they really stink.
They will bite their butts and rub their anus along the ground sometimes.
Draining them is cheap and easy

Dogs generall bite feets and legs if they have cysts (bathe in salt water and keep clean and dry at all times)

OR they may have something stuck in their paws (look for it and treat as cyst)

The only other option is fleas and they usually attack the underbelly and groin areas as the blood is easier to get to there.
