Your dog is most definatly pregnant, When dogs breed they all get stuck backwards. Don't take any notice of all the do gooders who say you are irrisponsible. I agree that there are alot if unwanted dogs in the country but you qbviously love your dogs and I am sure that when the puppies arrive in around 63-70 days you will make sure they are found good, loving homes. Just because you accidenly mated your dogs that doesn't make you irrisponsible. Please get your dog a whelping box and try to be there when she has her puppies, she will appreciate your company even if she manages ok on her own. If she has any problems e.g. long periods between puppys being born then call your vet but there is no reason why she shouldn't have strong, helthy puppies if she is healthy heself. You will need to increase her food and water while she is prgnant and whilr she is nursing. Good luck witheverything.

Yep, they will have been "backwards". That's how they mate.

They were mating and in around 2 months you will have a litter of puppies to try and find GOOD homes for.

You have 3 choices:

A) Learn (A LOT) about dog pregnancy and whelping before the puppies arrive. Keep in close contact with your vet. Learn how to ensure that the puppies get good homes, draft up contracts of ownership including spay neuter clause (which you obviously weren't given or you wouldn't be in this mess). Learn how to check that prospective homes are suitable. All in the next 2 months AND find GOOD homes for the puppies.

Given that you didn't know how dogs mate suggests to me that you have no chance with this option (oh, and expect to lose money).

B) Wait for the puppies to arrive, hope that the puppies and the dam survive, sell as many as you can to whoever turns up with the money. Don't bother to check on the new dogs because you MIGHT be upset by the level of care given to the pups by their new owners (they seemed such nice people/so knowledgeable about dogs etc. etc.). Add your own name to the list of backyard breeders who have created the problem of canine overpopulation. It's morally repugnant but probably the easiest option if you're not the caring sort.

C) Go to your vet IMMEDIATELY and ask for the pregnancy to be terminated. Get both dogs neutered.

I know this sounds harsh, (you sound more naive than uncaring) but dogs do not think in the same way as humans and will not go through the trauma in the same way that a woman would after abortion.

You've not researched your dogs' bloodlines so you have no way of knowing whether you have dogs of a genetic quality that's high enough to justify breeding from (Kennel Club registration is NO guarantee of quality).

To be honest I doubt the credentials of the breeder you got your dogs from if they didn't require you to neuter your pets.

You don't know about breeding and it will take more than the 2 months between conception and giving birth to learn.

I am in no way taking anything away from your dogs - I'm sure you love them, care for them and I'm sure they make wonderful pets, but so would many of the dogs on death row in pounds.

well how careless were you firstly keeping 2 un neutered dogs together, then not even knowing when she was in season. I bet it was her first season too and she will end up having a ceasarian or dying because you didn't know when the pups were due and even if you did, you didn't know that she was in trouble.
Take her to the vet right away and have a misalliance injection to stop the pups. She will come back into season though so you MUST keep the dog away for 3 weeks. Send him to boarding kennels to be sure, then get them both neutered.

Why do you have an unaltered male and female in the same house? That is pretty irresponsible. We have enough unwanted dogs, especially mixed breeds in this world that are being put to sleep everyday, why are you adding to it? Go get your dogs spayed ASAP and the male Neutered.

Bring the female to the vet to see if she's pregnant. Schedule a spay and this will terminate any pregnancy. Once she's recovered, have the male fixed as well. The world does not need more mixed breed pet quality dogs.

if she is pregnant she will slowly put on weight but the only way to tell is by taking her to the vet 30 days after mating, the vet may be able to feel something or do a scan to know for sure

I would say you can expect pups in about 2 months. After they're born, talk to your vet about getting the female spayed. In the meantime, get the male neutered.

Yeah, probably can expect puppies in about 63 days.

Take her to the vet and have her examined and while you're there have her spayed if it can be done safely. Now you don't have to worry about puppies anymore.
