Details: it results in my car (which I am still paying off, but do have Gap insurance) being totalled and me being physically unable to work for a week or so

Assuming this case is that straight forward (and the other person doesn't claim you had the red light and there was no culpable conduct by you)...

The other company will pay for the actual cash value of your car. Your GAP will pick up the rest (Good job with having that by the way!). If you have collision coverage, you may look to use that instead of going directly through the other company. Your own insurance company will generally work quicker and then pursue the other company for you and any deductable/out of pocket expenses).

If you have medical coverage on your own policy, that will pay for any reasonable and related medical costs and lost wages. Whatever your own company doesn't pay for, the other insurance company will pay for.

Seems open and shut... They should pay big time. The only way to make sure you get what you deserve is to get a lawyer. Lots of them will not require any money up front on a case like this.

let your insurance company sue them.
you should be able to recover the cost to replace the car, and any medical expenses.
