good question my friend,
however i have never heard of anyone 'cutting' off their body for this reason. I'm sure the prophet of Islam and his pure family would not want their followers to do this as they are far above this and don't need anyones body to be remembered.
Sunni's as you claim do not pay much attention to this major major historic event, purely for the simple reason that they do not understand the concept behind muharram. If it was fully understood in it's entirety then there would not be a single person Sunni shia or any other sect that would not feel grief for this bloody event that took place.
Unfortunately people pay far too much attention to the superficial aspect of remembering this occasion. The Sunni's see Shia's in gathering remembering and crying and lamenting for the love of the family of the prophet and without considering the much deeper aspects straight away consider this a bid ah, as the first answerer has done so. I do not believe this sort of important questions must be fobbed off in this manner. there are great Sunni scholars who have payed tribute to this occasion and it is recorded in their own books of tradition, but the ordinary Sunni does not even know this!

Just cos sum1 from a family is pious doesn't mean the rest of his family is as well. Look at Abu Talib, his nephew was so pious but yet he died a non-muslim, i think that s the reason sunnis do not follow the prohets family cos they are not protecting from sinning like the prophet, and don't say they are cos thats just something shias invented just to spite sunnis.

that is why there are Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims
Shia are descendants from the clan which caused the pain in Moharram
Sunni have forgiven that pain as is Allah's will
but Shia still wish to pay for that mistake and so they suffer during Moharram
