I have three different small pure breeds and I give them too much human food also. When I spoke to my vet about it back when one of them was getting their puppy shots, he of course said I needed to stop as it was so very bad for them.
He said put their dog food down, don't give any people food and when they are hungry enough they will eat their dog food. It works, but I still have a hard time not giving them steak, hamburgers, and they love Chinese fried rice.
We need to practice tough love even with our dogs. So tell your husband, no more people food and to do tough love.
Meaning when you love someone/something, you've got to toughen up and not give in to everything they want because what we want at times in life, is not good for us. So I guess, I've been learning that it even applies to silly dogs. If I love them enough, I'll think of their digestive system for when they are in their old age.
I'm sure other people will have much more valuable medical information, so thanks for asking the question. I'll look forward to reading the answers even knowing that many of the people out there are going to make us feel guilty for killing our dogs! lol

Blue Buffalo has been recalled, so stay away from it at this time. Feeding home cooked for a dog can work very well and solve some intestinal and allergy problems, however it isn't easy to get the correct nutritional balance, so unless you calculate vitamin, mineral, protein, and carbohydrates for your size dog, I would not attempt it without professional guidance. Get some beef broth, no salt, de fatted, warm it and add it to a good quality kibble (not pedigree) that has NO corn, wheat, soy, or by-products, and only one protein source listed first on the ingredient label. Put it down and leave it for 10 minutes, unless she is actively eating. If she refuses it, pick it up and save it in the refrigerator until next mealtime. Do not feed anything else, no treats, nothing but plain water until she is due to eat again. Only save the food for one more feeding, then toss it and start over. No healthy dog has ever starved to death when food is available, but sometimes you have to train them with a hardened heart. Been there and done that 3 times, and I know it isn't fun, however it will work and both of you will be happier in the long run. This may take several days, so don't give up.

The reason why your dog won't eat any dog food is because she's constantly fed human food, and knows she has control over your husband in this aspect. I mean, why would any dog eat dog food when she can get human food? The only way you're going to get your dog to eat her dog food is if you stop giving her human food completely, and she realizes that dog food is the only food she's allowed to have. If the dog hasn't already, she will gain weight as a result, and your husband will soon realize that he's harming her. He probably thinks that you're just overreacting. He's not going to believe what you're saying until it actually happens.

You are right that human food can be dangerous for her. You really need to put down your foot about your husband feeding her table scraps. My mom was really bad about feeding our dogs scraps. That is until I moved away and became a vet tech. Now I no better and I will refuse to let her feed my dogs anything that I dont ok. And she has slowly stoped feeding her dogs all that crap too. But when she says oh it wont hurt them I either put my dogs up (when they visit her dogs) or take the food out of her hands my self and put it in the trash. She tried to feed my dogs all of the left over ham from christmas and I about killed her (it was about 2 lbs worth of ham scraps!). She reluctantly threw it all away. You really need to be firm in not letting your husband feed the scraps. If he insists on feeding her scraps talk to your vet about what people food she can get and what she cant. I know personally that I sometimes feed my dogs a little scrap like a piece of bread or something but that is like maybe twice a month they get people food if that. With the father in law tell him that she is your dog and your rules are that she is not to be fed people food. If he doesnt abide by those rules then just make sure if you are going to meet him do it at his house so the dog wont be present for him to give food to. I know this worked with my in laws and parents. My husbands grandmother is BAD about feeding her dogs scraps and I set out rules saying she cant feed mine. It is hard for her but she does abide by my rules with my dogs. What you might try is giving her treats. If your husband wants to feed her something "that tastes better" than dog food he can grab a dog snack instead. If you have any questions email me and I would be more than happy to give more tips.
Sorry so long

Dog food carry all the vitamins that the dog needs to maintain health.
By giving her dog food;;
You are malnutritioning her.
This can cause future problems for her in the long run.
With you husband giving her food when you say no.
This is simple.
Just assert your womanly authority.
We are good at this.
Ask him which he likes better "giving the dog table food, or marital sex? "
Not to be too forward but, I'm sure he will pick the second one.

You have to blame yourself for feeding her human food because she is incapable of going into the refrigerator and getting it herself....
My advice: stop feeding her human food now! she could have serious digestive problems in the future. Keep her food available to her and she will eat when she is hungry. If you are eating and she starts jumping you MUST in a firm voice say "NO". You never ever have to use physical discipline on your dog.

My grans dog will only eat chicken and nothing else we have to get him the best meat other wise he wont eat it. It's crazy i know we've had people over to try and encourage him to eat dog food but hes not up for it.But i don't think that its going to improve his health doing that.Maybe if you get a specialist over and get him to tell your husband the damage he could be doing to the dog in the long term he might stop.

I would talk to your vet about it and then have your husband listen to what the vet recommends. If your husband still continues to feed it human food, even after the vet says not to, then you have a big problem. Sounds like your husband loves the dog, but he's going to end up loving it to death.

Dump the man, keep the dog! Just kidding, you need to seriously take charge of this situation and not just sit there while your husband does this. Take the dog out of the room or put it in a kennel when you guys eat.

It won't kill the dog! If you were a dog and were given the choice, don't you think you'd eat human food, rather than dog food?
The problem is, the dog needs the balanced nutrition in dog food to be healthiest. But as long as it knows someone will give it table scraps, it has no need to eat the dog food in its dish. If you stop the table food, it will eventually be hungry enough to eat its own food.
