Demons do not cause most mental illness. Jesus did not spend a third of his time casting out demons. He did do this a few times though. But most mental illness are true psychiatric conditions and need medicinal help. No demons are not responsible for mental retardation, as that usually is there from birth.

Mental illness is indeed demons. If you believe in God and the Bible, think about what mental illness was considered in the Bible. It makes alot more sense than what man and Satan wants you to think. It also makes sense that most people don't believe that. The Bible says that only few will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Unless I change some things I don't feel I'm going there either, just to let you know you are not hearing this from what unbelievers would consider a Holy Roller.

Mental illness is caused by many things, but not by actual 'demons' in the religious sense.

Things that can cause mental illness are:

genetic factors
experience of trauma / abuse in childhood
chemical inbalance in the brain
addiction to drugs and / or alcohol

There are others. Anyone who thinks they may have emotional or mental problems needs to be properly assessed by a psychiatrist.

It would depend on who you asked. Quite simply we don't know a lot about the mind. Sure there are theories but they don't always hold all the answers.

Most people would say that mental illness isn't caused by demons. Instead they'd say it was caused by something biological, behavioural, psychodynamic, cognitive. As far as we know at the moment there is no definitive answer. All the psychology theories that describe mental illness don't support all the mental illness there are. They describe some better than others. So, perhaps it is a mixture of things? I dunno. One thing is sure though, according to modern thought it isn't caused by demons. We think.

There was a time when this was believed to be so, and the treatment for this was trepanation, the cutting of a hole in the skull for the demons to exit.
We don't do this so much anymore, nowadays we think that mental illness is generally caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters, and we just give pills.

I think so - I suffered and the Holy Spirit healed me. If you come to believe that Yes is the answer, or want to know more, find me - We all have spiritual eyes and ears, only some are disfunctional. Those people who hear voices etc, mental disorders etc, have well aware spiritual senses, only the only true direction to look is to Christ, who never healed anyone from 'psychological' past emotional disorders, but yes, cast out a lot of demons of darkness, negativity, etc.

I am a long time DDD (schizophrenic) patient who has heard voices and seen things but doesn't anymore due primarily, I think, to modern neuroleptic medications. I don't believe in demons in the religious sense but looked up the psychiatrist you cited and found ten cites for her books. I am interested in what she says and may buy one of her books just to see if she has any scientific evidence for the supernatural existence of "demons". Thanks!

No. Its caused by chemicals in the brain. Either the lack there of, or too much.

Medication help regulate the chemicals to make a person feel more normal.

Mental illness can be a "personal demon", but is not caused by demons. Mental illnesses can, for the most part, be traced to chemical deficiency in the brain.
