I have been leafing through the machinerys handbook and have been unable to locate a formula for the power required at the motor to tap Acme threads effectively. I want to tap a 5/8-8 Acme continuosly but am conscerned with the HP required. Material to be tapped is AISI 1040.

Don't worry so much about the horsepower as much as the thread hole size... go to the largest size hole recommended for that thread, especially in 1040 steel!
Also, there are a couple of starter taps, (undersized), you should probably use if you find that you can't do it in one pass.

If your machine has little power, just slow it down with the gearbox and all will be well. Torque, not power, will be your concern.
