To picture what I am saying, you are at 7-11 at the beach and a guy is in front of you in line buying a soda. He has a t-shirt on and some carbo shorts but no shoes. When he arches back one of his feet, his soles are really black.

It's never gross, beach or not. I've been barefoot for ten years; work, shopping, restaurants, concerts, hiking, everywhere. Feet do *not* smell when bare, you don't get worms from going barefoot (hookworm was only ever common in the Southern states and even there it's as good as gone since the outhouses have been replaced by modern plumbing), and any bacteria you may pick up are on the soles of shoes as well, and aren't likely to jump onto the food or other products unless he picks them up with his toes. There are also NO health rules against bare feet in stores -regardless of whether food is served or not, nor have I ever been able to find a single insurance company requiring or even advising stores to make their customers wear shoes. This bias against bare feet is based on two things, the fact that feet *just out of closed shoes* often do smell bad, but that's caused by bacteria breaking down sweat inside closed shoes, not by the sweat itself. And second lots of US stores post signs 'shirts and shoes required by the Health Department' so people think obviously it must be unhealthy... however those signs are not true, the Health Department does NOT have any footwear requirements for customers. Somehow that myth got started, probably by stores that wanted to set their own dresscode (which is their choice, they can require ties & suits too), and someone, somewhere probably thought people would comply more easily if it were posted as a law instead of just store policy.... then the myth spread and now lots of people believe bare feet are unhygienic. :-( In other countries bare feet are rare too, but the only comments I ever get is 'doesn't that hurt' and 'aren't your feet cold', very few people in Europe believe it's unsafe or unhealthy.

Honestly, I wouldn't notice his soles that much since I don't care at all about male feet. But if he arches back a dirty blackened sole, of course I'd see it--but I still wouldn't care about it except for noticing how much tougher a bare foot can actually get if the soles that blackened and that tough.

Ummm as long as the shop doesn't sell food I'm okay with it. I think it depends on the shop keeper and whether their shop is catrpeted or hard wood or what. Wouldn't it be neat to have a shop with white beach sand as the flooring? You'd never have to sweep, just rake it once in a while.

i think of anyplace around water is great like a sea coast or pool. I additionally think of that's appropriate while enjoying Frisbee or volleyball at a park on grass. in case you around the sea something is going. I even have seen human beings grocery paying for in bare toes there and that i've got completed that myself. that's a extra casual atmosphere there. form of relaxing to do now and lower back. :-)

I have no problem at all with it, as you can tell from my name!
As far as the soles of his feet being dirty... it is the dirt accumulated over one or two days. How many weeks/months/years of dirt are you tracking around on the bottom of your shoes?

"No shirt, no shoes, no service."
If you are offended by the barefooted ones (as I am), frequent shops that post such a sign.
