i'm just wondering the best way to go about this without putting myself out there TOO much?

As a guy myself, I must tell you this.
Subtle hints don't work. Clues don't work. We don't read minds.
He's probably scared of your rejection, so he's playing it cool. I think the idea of mentioning that you won't have a date, or nobody to "hang out" with might work. It will allow him to safely offer to accompany you and will probably make him think it's his idea (though is it really ever?). Then once you're alone with him, use the other suggestions about flirting and touching. If he still doesn't get the idea, then decide if you still want him. If you do, then tell him he "just doesn't get it." When he asks, "What?" Lay one on him and walk away. THAT should do the trick.

touch him while you're talking to him in a subtle manner, make eye contact and have a sly smile. Touch his arm or knee. laugh at his jokes, even if they're lame.

Flirt, laugh at his joke, touch his arm, invite him for a drink, etc

drop clues here and there.say some thing like "my friends are going on group dates, only prob. i dont hv a date". something like that.

ask him if he likes u ,u dont play around with your feelings get it over with so u dont invest to much in it.
