colonel is the highest of those listed followed by captain and then lieutenant, those three are all commisioned officers. a sergeant is a non commisioned officer and has different responsibilities.

Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Colonel, altho there are more ranks than that. they would be(in the Army) Private, Private2, Private first class, Specialist, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major and Command Sergeant Major for the enlisted ranks. 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General and General for the Officer ranks

Colonel, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant in descending order. However, being a retired NCO, in order of importance to the military, it goes like this: Sergeant, Captain, Colonel and maybe Lieutenant. Just joking of course!
