colonel is the highest of those listed followed by captain and then lieutenant, those three are all commisioned officers. a sergeant is a non commisioned officer and has different responsibilities.

Colonel, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant in descending order. However, being a retired NCO, in order of importance to the military, it goes like this: Sergeant, Captain, Colonel and maybe Lieutenant. Just joking of course!
