Definitley not. When pregnant with my son at 20 years old (6 yrs ago) I was worried about the pain. I took raspberry leaf in the run up to the birth then when in labour drank a couple of glasses of sherry, used a tens machine and got the breathing technique down to a tee. When I went to hospital I thought I was no where near ready to give birth as it did not hurt - it was just uncomfortable. I was promptly examined and rushed to a delivery room to give birth straight away - I was 10cm dilated! In less than half hour my son made his way into the world. The only time I can say I really felt pain was when his head came out, but then I knew it was nearly over and didn't care! I think people who say it hurt just need to get on with it and push! It is not as bad as some women make out! Obviously some women have medical complications, which is fair enough, but those who cry and scream for no reason just want the attention and just need to get down and push!

I had a horrible doctor and a dry birth and it was pure hell!!! Now that I know a little something about it, I realize that I was treated like an animal! Doctors are suppose to prepare you for the actual "birth" by applying a strong lubricant and making sure that they give you the pain medicine a short time before the actual birth. My doctor gave me the epidermal THE NIGHT BEFORE I had my son. Also, he didn't apply any lubricant OR make any kine of cut on my "part" so I was literally torn in-half. It was the worst pain in the world!!! If I ever do it again I'll know to really check out my doctor before hand.

Having had six kids of varying amounts of weight, length, etc, plus having run the gamut from at-home birth with a Midwife to hospital births w/out anesthesia (and with), I'd still say that yes, childbirth hurts. It is a given that that much pressure and movement through a womans' body is bound to be very uncomfortable. My best advice, though, is to find what you feel really comfortable with as it's your body and your child you are birthing. Don't let anyone's silly advice about the "correct" way to give birth deter you from your own birthing decisions. That way, no matter how things go, you will feel good about yourself & know that you did your best.
Good luck!

Everyone has a different level of pain tolerance. I didn't have any drugs, and I didn't think it hurt as bad as I had heard it would. But it did hurt when the baby came out. The contractions didn't hurt all that bad though and I only had to push once or twice not for three hours like some of my friends. If you are the wimpy type who can't handle any pain then you will probably think it hurts worse than people say, but if you have a high pain tolerance it won't be so bad.

It really depends on the length of the labor and different people. Also each birth can be different. I had two births and the second one was much worse than the first one. But I was able to get through it without anesthesia.

I don't think you need to worry too much. Think how many women have been through this before you. And there is always anesthesia.

Not always. It's different for some people. I went in figuring you couldn't imagine what it would feel like, so I didn't worry about it ahead of time and thought I'd just deal with it when the time came. My experience turned out to be nothing at all like the stories I hear. It was at times very uncomfortable, but not painful at all like I had heard and read about. And I had no drugs or any alternative methods either. So no, not everyone has a terrible painful labor and delivery.

Depends who said, and what they said, and who you are... it hurts, but not the same amount for everyone.

Hypnobirth works well or not, for different women. The trick is the FAITH that you can get through childbirth without anxiety, regardless of how much it might hurt. Believing in yourself and releasing your fear is EVERYTHING if you want a natural childbirth.

My experience was, labor contractions hurt about as bad as the worst diarrhea cramps I've ever had (when I had food poisoning), but the pain is like menstrual cramps. You get through it just like you get through having really bad intestinal cramps - you squat and breathe and wait for it to pass through you, knowing it won't kill you or last forever. What happens to your mind is a lot like what happens when you have severe nausea -- you can't think about anything but vomiting.. except you can't think about anything but breathing through the contractions. By the time I was pushing the baby out, I was so focused that I didn't really perceive additional pain from stretching of the birth canal and labia. By that time, the pain of labor has emptied your mind and focused you on relaxing your body and pushing the baby out. You don't care if it "hurts." You're just going - omigod I can do this, I'm doing it, I'm pushing the baby out!!

It can hurt if you go natural, but Lamaze help me a lot. I learned how to expect the pain, breathe through it and relax.

If you get some type of drug (epidural) or something during labor, then no, no pain until it wears off. No sure about anything else.

The pain is worth the pleasure that comes from it, a beautiful new life that is there for you...

The short answer is: Heck yes it hurts!

There are lots of things you can do for pain management, though, running the gamut from epidurals to breathing and relaxation techniques. Everyone has different pain tolerances, though, so what works best for one isn't necessarily the best choice for someone else.

And after it's all over and you're holding this perfect new person in your arms, it all seems worth it.
