The Larson B ice shelf would dwarf Rhode Island and has been researched since at least 2002, and the scientist are still trying to collaborate on how and why besides the obvious warming of the Earth surface. They have found an ecosystem that has existed for over 10,000 years,undisturbed and now will probably be destroyed.

I read that it was the size of Rhode Island and that it was stable for over ten thousand years. I don't know how long it was actually breaking off but they found lots of life flourishing underneath where it had been.
