I would second Rays the Steaks as one of the best. I cannot second any other choices listed, and Toro Tapas closed several years ago, it was replaced by Extra Virgin, a middling Italian Restaurant. A few other options would be:
American fare - Tallua (Clarendon),
Italian - Bebo (Crystal City)
Thai - Thai Square, Bangkok 54 (both on Columbia), an Shig Thai (Courthouse)
Kabobs - Ravi Kabob (corner of Glebe and Rt. 50)
Vietnamese - Minh's (Clarendon)
Mexican - Guajillo (Clarendon - next to Ray's the Steaks)
Sandwiches and Pizza - Italian Store (Lee Highway at Spout Run)
Chicken - Crisp and Juicy (Lee Highway)
There are many more, but that is what I can come-up with off the top of my head.

Theismans, it's in Alexandria, it's owned by Joe Theisman the Notre Dame QB and later played for the Redskins. Excellent food. Right across the street from the METRO

The Quarterdeck, near Fort Myers. It is NOT fancy by ANY defnition. It is a bar, with a back room and a back porch. They have crabs. They have oyster po-boys, delicious fish sand sandwiches.
Everything is quite reasonable. it is so NOT touristy, which is part of what I love about it.
