SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Catholic Diocese has agreed to pay at least $48 million to people molested by priests... [Associated Press
January 5, 2007 ]
Federal Bankruptcy Judge Gregg W. Zive in Reno, Nev., said the settlement would provide survivors “with some measure of closure and allow them to move forward and continue the healing process.”
The abused Catholics have my heartfelt sympathy for the outrage perpetrated against them by those who represent their church.
Certainly, they are entitled to the church paying any therapy costs to help them achieve closure but in this day when the Catholic church higherarchy closes longstanding but less used churches because of lack of money, why do abused but continuing Catholics sue for so much money from their church?

You're being awfully protective of those who shielded the abusers while ignoring the victims. Would you do the same for General Motors, Nabisco, or your local police force?

These are punitive damages that are designed to prevent recurrence of the abuse. It is the same thing that is done when any other institution, company or individual fails, through negligence, to live up to its obligation to prevent foreseeable harm.

And as it turns out, this was the only way in which they could get the church's attention. Before they sued, the abuses were swept under the rug repeatedly.

Many of those who were abused have left the church. They can no longer watch a priest perform mass without remembering what happened to them at the hands of the men who held the host high above the altar on Sundays.

They paid for admission all those Sundays and felt they got ripped off. They just want their money back.

And they close the churches because they don't have enough priests. They won't let the molesters in anymore.

The word hypocrite springs to mind. Ultimately you have millions of catholics scraping together dimes and dollars for the collection plate, oblivious to the fact it would all be pooled together to make a handful of other catholics wealthy.

Wouldn't you?

The church has a history of protecting the offending priests by moving them from one unsuspecting parrish to another, rather than the innocent children.

Therapy doesn't achieve closure. The victims are messed up for the rest of their lives. The trauma never goes away.

I think they deserve the money. . . . why not sue them they probably tried everything in their power to cover up the abuse.
