I do not spay/neuter performance dogs, they are more likely to be injured. Here are a couple of good articles about S/N.

Less muscle mass = more injuries. Many sports medicine people will tell you this as well.

Less active = softer muscle = more injuries

Statistics are out there if you look. S/N dogs are much more likely to be injured, especially torn ACLs.

S/N dogs are also 4 Xs as likely to get bone cancer, one of the most common forms.

She should not do any activity for the first 2 weeks following surgery. After that I would easy her back into it. In the long term, it will not affect her performance at all- and in fact will make her a better agility dog because you do not have the hormonal influences. Within a month she'll be back it no problems

Good luck with agility! It's a lot of fun

She should do no training after her spay, but there will be absolutely no affect on her performance in agility training or competition.

Thank you SO MUCH for spaying your dog!!

Ususally the rest time after spay is at least 10 days to let the stitches close and heal completely.
Then she can begin playing again.

At this age, she should be fine. The only problem with spaying and agility is if you spay before her bones are finished growing.

I'd keep her quiet until the stitches are out (apx 10-14 days) then see how she feels. But check with her vet, to be sure.

A spay normally takes a couple of weeks to fully heal. After that she will be as good as new. And no it will not affect her performance. I also have a collie. Aren't the wonderful!

No getting your dog spayed doesn't effect agility performance. She only needs to refrain from jumping and running for @ 10 days and then baring any complications it's business as usual.

Performance dogs are no more likely to be injured if they are spay/neutered then if they are intact...that is incorrect info.

They are more likely to get mammary cancers, reproductive cancer, pyometria (a very serious uterine infection that is often fatal) then they are to be injured.

I've worked with performance dogs for years as well as working and hunting dogs, altered and intact. I'm also vp of a very busy obedience club as well.

she won't be out of action for long, only a couple of weeks until the wound heals. Still do gentle excersize and training with her.
Kudos to you for getting her spayed.
I'm a huge border collie fan too. Mine is a boy named 'Moss'. Due to get neutered in the next month.

Yes - not having the upheaval of hormone changes, she will pretty much have one personality all the time & be able to be more focused & therefore trainable - hooray!

She will be out of action for about a week or so - till the stitches come out.

Only a week or two, you'll find that she'll be a big groggy the day after the op but within a week she'll be back to normal and by two weeks there'll be no stopping her!

Once the incision heals she will be no different but be careful not to let her do too much before it heals. Usually around 10 days is sufficient.
