Well take it from a girl who has tryed about everyway of breaking up with someone....
Do you feel like you still want to be friends but dont want the whole relationship thing?
Well that's how i usually feel, and i always feel like if i let them break up with me then we will still be friends but if i break up with them then we wont.
That is the worst approch ever....
Dont try to make them not like you....
The truth does hurt, but honesty is the best way to handle it. You need to tell him straight up how you feel, dont try and drop hints, sorry but boys never catch on!!!
Just tell him the truth, i know your afraid and you may not want to, but it will cause both of you less pain~!
Good Luck!

the best way to break up with him is to talk to him RIGHT NOW. Don't wait anymore, because the longer it takes the more he will be hurt. Be HONEST. tell him direct to the point what you feel. and tell the reason why you want to break up with him. He will feel down because of this, but hey at least you've been honest and true about it and that is the most important thing about it. Talk to him like a friend, so that atleast the hurting is not much and he still move on with his life.

Sorry there is no gently, unless he doesn't like you as much as you think he does. But don't drag it out, that will only make it harder. You might try finding out through a third party, mutual friend how he is feeling about you. maybe it will make things easier if you find out he also is not to into the relationship. And whatever you say don't say " Can we just be friends " Because sad but true guys and girls that have been in an intimate relationship can not just be friends. I don't care what anyone says. It just doesn't work.

This sounds weird, but it works. You have to act like you don't like him as much anymore. Not in a big way, but just enough so its not a complete surprise. I would tell him the way you feel, apologize, and move on. It is sooo tough, but you'll be fine.

Sit him down face to face and tell him your feelings. Tell him what you feel has changed and let him know that if nothing else, you need a little time/space to figure out what it is that you want in a relationship.
