Actually the New Testament did both. Matthew 1:1-17 traces Jesus's lineage through Joseph and Luke 3:28-38 through Mary.

" They both arrive at David as the common ancestor so Jesus is covered in this regard from both side of his earthy parents.

If you will read the geneology found in Matthew 1 you will see that there are 5 women mentioned there. Tamar,Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba (Uriah's wife) and Mary.

Aw,but you're forgetting when there were no male heirs the promise goes to the women.Mary's geneology still includes Joseph tacked on after Heli,because they were chauvenists back then.
