Actually the New Testament did both. Matthew 1:1-17 traces Jesus's lineage through Joseph and Luke 3:28-38 through Mary.
As my source below states: " The Matthew genealogy follows Joseph's line (Jesus' legal father), through David's son Solomon. Luke follows Mary's line (Jesus' blood mother), through David's son Nathan. " They both arrive at David as the common ancestor so Jesus is covered in this regard from both side of his earthy parents.
Remember that the New Testament was written by many people of faith and therefore could differ in certain details. They made sure though that the prophecy you quoted is substantiated. Incidentally, the requirement about the Messiah being of David's line was also stipulated in 2 Samuel 7:12-13.

McClintock and powerful’s Cyclopædia tells us on web site 773, column 2: “In construction their genealogical tables, that's easily widely used that the Jews reckoned completely by guys, rejecting the place the blood of the grandfather exceeded to the grandson with the aid of a daughter, the call of the daughter herself, and counting that daughter’s husband for the son of the maternal grandfather ” in protecting with this rule, Joseph’s call could replace Mary’s in Luke’s account, even even with the indisputable fact that the relatives tree there replaced into traced with the aid of Mary’s lineage. The Cyclopaedia sees interior the very wording of Luke’s account a affirmation of this theory, asserting, web site 774, column a million: “The evangelist Luke has severely prominent the actual from the criminal relatives tree by a parenthetical fact: ‘Jesus being (as replaced into reputed) the son of Joseph (yet extremely) the son of Heli,’ or his grandson by his mom’s part.”—Luke 3:23.

There are women mentioned in the geneology of Christ.
Lots of thos women were important to the fullfillment of the coming of Jesus
Rahab the prostitue, Ruth, both mentioned in Matthew Chap 1 in the family tree
Also read the beginning of the Gospel of Luke.
Gives the geneology all the way back to Adam and Eve.
Hope that helps some

Ancient history didn't follow the ancestry of women. That's why the first born son was a name sake. The bible didn't trace the lineage of women because history didn't trace the lineage of women. You were John's Son or Johnson...You were David's Son or Davidson...You were Jack's Son or Jackson.

Society was misogynistic, but the Bible is not.
The Bible says that men and women are equal.
Men corrupted the concept of equality, not God.

I don't know what - misogynistic - means but, good question Dude.
Way back, when men were bound in dense ignorance, they thought life only sprang from thier loins, woman had nothing to do with it.
When men wanted to stamp King David out of existance, they slaughtered all Davids male descendants, in order to stamp the genetic line out.(You see, mans ignorance shielded Davids daughters from the slaughter). It was the Daughters of David that carried on the family, genetic line. Shhhhhhhhh......

The Bible is only interested in the people of God from Adam to Jesus.
It is not an encyclopedia.
