A friend of mine with two boys recently separated with the boy's dad having been together over 15 years and moved into a new place. For the past week or so, their dog has continually gone outside and pulled all the garbage out and scattered around the yard. We think he is acting out of anger due to the breakup of his family. How do you correct this? I advised my friend to put her garbage in the shed and lock it up. He is a good dog and has behaved like this before. What can she do to help her dog and make it better for everyone? Thanks!

Not anger....stress. Not only is someone missing from his life, it's likely the people in the house are stressed too.
Locking up the garbage is the best option.

He's a dog, he's not acting out of anger. However, his world has changed - he's in a new place, there's someone missing from his life and he's likely not getting all the attention he used to with all that's been going on. Locking up the garbage for a while is a good idea, the dog will settle down and be himself when his life has settled down some. He needs a routine, regular walks, etc., and he'll be fine again.

Dogs, just as children, do in fact act out when behaviorally when changes of that nature are made. The dog is likely confused and may be getting into it because of this.
Another very real possibility is that he never had the chance to play with garbage in the backyard. If he did not previously have access to it, you do not know whether or not he would have done the same.
Follow your advice and have her lock up the garbage. Also get him new toys- something different than he's previously had. This may help distract him. He needs time to adjust.

Well my dog does the same thing but he does it because he is hungry. When I forget to give him food he will do it. But it sounds as though the dog is acting out of anger maybe if the people give the dog more love and TLC. All dogs need it. The boys could give the dog walks and if the kids are young and have so much energy it tires the kid and dog. Hope this helps. My best wishes to the family it always is sad having a friend who is going through a seperation.

Dogs live in the moment. It's not an anger issue. He's got energy to burn and he needs to be exercised...minimum 30 minutes on a walk would be a great start.
His routine has changed (minus the father) and his energy needs to be channeled.
Locking up the garbage is also a good idea. Out of sight...out of mind (unless it smells really good...lol) Has the dog been caught in the act? If not, are they sure it's not another critter? Raccoons are notorious for getting into the trash...
Best wishes!

It's new place the dog is stressed and the garbage has been left out like a playground.
What would anyone expect a dog to do?

Dogs really can feel emotion and turmoil much more than we all give them credit for.It sounds to me like he is just acting out, because he does feel sad.If they could get back together that would be great, but as we all know that doesn't happen all the time.It may take time, but like all of us he will get over it and move on.

If I had this problem I would discipline him, like say bad dog. If this keeps happening maybe she should cover the trash or keep him on a leash when he goes outside!
