A fun way to do it is to hang 2 meters in your kitchen, one for you and one for your mom, and let your mom do the same thing.
Than you agree to measure your waist once a week, on a certain day and for each inch (or even half an inch) that comes off, you cut the same amount off your meter. And do the same for your mom's meter with the inches she lost.
The first one to finish the meter, wins! :-)

A goal and reward is a great idea. Eating healthy is actually cheaper so every time you DONT buy an expensive calorie laden treat put that money in your reward jar. Your mutual goal can be a weekend at a spa together when you both can fit into the new outfits you have in mind. Buy each others' tickets so you are letting each other down and not only yourself if you do not make your fitness goals. Put each others pictures on your respective fridges, along with a picture of the body type you are working towards. Take your cell phones on your daily walks or call each other as you are leaving for you walks or work outs and again when you are done. Buy each other beautiful bath products that become part of your daily rituals. As you get more toned it will become more enjoyable to pamper yourself with lovely skin smoothing shaving products as you notice your calves getting shapelier for example. Listen to the same inspiring tune on your IPODs as you are walking. Remember that your progress will be a little faster than hers if your Mom is menopausal. But working out will help her through the transition tremendously. (Experience talking here.....)

First, don't just pick a "diet" choose something that can be a lifestyle change. Loosing the weight then going back to the same unhealthy eating patterns when you reach your target goal is a recipe for disaster. Keep in contact with each other. Join a group. I have lost 30 pounds and have found that being in a group of others that share my same problems and goals is really been helpful and inspirational. Weekly weigh-ins and challenges help keep you motivated. Good luck.

Keep a journal online at a yahoo360 blog or something and make it so that each of you can see what ya'lls progress is. Take pictures and post them.
Also make goals together. Encourage one another, adn see that you accomplish your goals.
Have fun and I think thats a great Idea.

If you both have access to email you can email each other little words of encouragement each day. Email each other recipes and sample menus as well.
