Blood type is inherited. It is controlled by genetics. The genes, in turn determine blood type via the proteins encoded for in the DNA. Those proteins ("antigens") reside on the surface of red blood cells, where they are recognized by the immune system. If you are given non-matching blood, your immune system recognizes the new blood as a foreign invader through these molecules, and seeks to destroy it. That is the basis of a transfusion reaction.

Blood type is determined by genetics. There are two kinds of molecules that can be on a person's blood cells, the A type and the B type. AB have both kinds of molecules while type of have neither molecule.
You can't receive a transfusion from someone with a molecule you yourself don't have. Type 0 can give blood to anyone but can only receive blood from other 0s. ABs can get blood from anyone, but only give to other ABs.

A person's blood type is determined by what if any antigens are present on the surface of their red blood cells. Type A people have A antigens, type B people have B antigens, type AB people have both A and B antigens, and type O people have neither A nor B antigens.

There are three alleles or versions of the blood type gene: A, B, and O. Since everybody has two copies of these genes, there are six possible combinations; AA, BB, OO, AB, AO, and BO. In genetic terms, these combinations are called genotypes, and they describe the genes you got from your parents.
