All the above answers are correct in their own way.
"Volte face" and "vire volte" originate from the movements in the dance known as "La Volta" in Italian or "La Volte" in French, a Renaissance dance brought to France by Catherine de Medici akin to the "Gaillard".
In this dance you had to do several turns ("Volte"= "times" or "turns" in Italian) and it is regarded as the predecessor of the Waltz. There is a well known painting of Queen Elizabeth The First doing this dance and being lifted up in a jump.
I would only dispute the word "Province" above and suspect it is a typing error for "Provence" in Mr Keenan's answer.

The French word "revolte" (revolt) comes from the same source.
PS. I take it you really mean "volte", and not "volt" as unit in electricity, so named because of the Italian engineer Volta who invented the first chemical battery.
