I have a friend who just moved there and I would like to send her a gift card for a local, non-chain place. Type of food is not particularly important but a place with a great atmosphere is.

I grew up in Newport News, and moved when I was 22. The best "non_chain" restraunt I ever been to (and most memorable being young,) Was Luigi's Italian Restaurant. Even Mr. Luigi himself would walk around asking how was your dinner!!

I never went into newport news, but right across the bridge/tunnel (which isn't far at all) is a great spot for restaurants- Norfolk, VA. If they like concerts- get them a gift cert combo of tickets to a great show at The Norva, along with dinner at Backstage Cafe (on monticello ave). Also there's a great place called Freemason Abbey- it's a restaurant remodeled from a over 100+ year old church. They have nice steaks and good seafood, their specials are the best though- nice, not too dressy/not too casual.

Hope this helps!

In Newport News? Not too much to choose from with the exception of the standard staples, Outback, Chile's TGI Fridays. If I had to pick I would say Wings To Go!! There wings are off the chain!!
