It's show business slang. In "Variety", a paper specifically written for Hollywood and Broadway they talk in a form of shorthand. A headline might be "Hics Nix Pix" They are meaning that the "Hics" (country) "NIx" (dislikes) "Pix" ( A certain movie.)

It probaly comes from the German "nicht" - meaning not.
